Behind The Bag: The Story of Hermès

Behind The Bag: The Story of Hermès

Hermès is one of the most famous luxury brands in the world. Known for its high-quality craftsmanship, unique designs, and attention to detail, Hermès has become a symbol of timeless luxury. But how did it all begin? The story starts with a skilled craftsman named Thierry Hermès.

The Founder’s Journey

Thierry Hermès was born in 1801 in Krefeld, Germany. Later, he moved to France, where he started what would become one of the greatest luxury brands in history. At first, Hermès was not a fashion brand. Thierry was a master harness maker who created beautiful bridles and saddles for European aristocrats. His dedication to quality quickly earned him a reputation among the wealthy.

From Horse Gear to Fashion Icon

In 1837, Thierry Hermès opened his first workshop in Paris, making handmade equestrian equipment. His work attracted royal and noble clients who admired his craftsmanship. As times changed and fewer people needed horse-riding accessories, the company adapted. Thierry’s son, Charles-Émile Hermès, expanded the brand by introducing leather travel bags and, eventually, handbags.

The Birth of the Famous Hermès Bags

Thierry Hermès did not design handbags himself, but his commitment to quality inspired future generations. The first Hermès handbag was created in 1922 when Émile-Maurice Hermès, Thierry’s grandson, made one for his wife because she could not find a bag she liked. This moment led to Hermès becoming a leader in luxury handbags.

In the 1930s, Hermès introduced the Kelly bag, originally called the “Sac à Dépêches.” It became world-famous in the 1950s when Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco was seen using it to hide her pregnancy. In the 1980s, the brand introduced the Birkin bag, inspired by a conversation between actress Jane Birkin and Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas. Today, both the Kelly and Birkin bags are some of the most desired handbags in the world.

Thierry Hermès’ passion for craftsmanship still guides the brand. Every Hermès bag is handmade by skilled artisans who spend years perfecting their craft. Because of this dedication to quality and exclusivity, Hermès bags continue to be a symbol of luxury and status.
